Australia produced one of the early surprises of the tournament, beating a heavily-favoured Turkey 2-0 at BC Place in Vancouver. Tony Popovic's side soaked up relentless pressure and punished their opponents on the counter in a disciplined, gritty display that delivered just their fifth-ever World Cup win.

Irankunda and Metcalfe pounce

Nestory Irankunda became Australia's youngest World Cup scorer, finishing with skill and composure on the break in the 27th minute. Connor Metcalfe doubled the lead on 75 minutes, driving forward from midfield before hammering a low strike home from 23 metres to settle the contest.

Beach's dream debut

The night belonged as much to goalkeeper Patrick Beach, the 22-year-old handed a shock debut ahead of Mat Ryan. He produced eight saves, including a sharp early stop from Arda Guler that launched the move for the opener. Turkey racked up 30 shots and 72 percent possession but could not break down a backline that made 55 clearances.

For Turkey it was a chastening opening, with all their territorial dominance counting for nothing. Australia, meanwhile, left Vancouver dreaming of the knockout rounds after a smash-and-grab to remember.
