Austria secured their first World Cup victory in 36 years with a dramatic 3-1 win over tournament debutants Jordan at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara. The European side had to weather a Jordanian fightback before sealing the points deep into stoppage time.

Schmid opens, Olwan responds

Romano Schmid put Austria ahead in the 20th minute with a superb long-range strike. Jordan refused to fold, and Ali Olwan curled in off the far post early in the second half on 50 minutes to register the nation's first-ever goal at a World Cup and level the contest.

Late drama in Santa Clara

Austria edged back ahead through a Yazan Al-Arab own goal in the 76th minute, and the result was finally put beyond doubt when Marko Arnautovic converted a penalty in the 102nd minute of a marathon stoppage-time period, awarded after VAR spotted a handball by Saleem Obaid.

The win lifted Austria's hopes of progressing from Group J, while Jordan, despite an encouraging debut showing, were left to rue the late blow on the road to elimination.
