Ghana began their 2026 World Cup with the narrowest of wins, Caleb Yirenkyi's stoppage-time strike earning a 1-0 victory over Panama at BMO Field in Toronto. It was a result snatched at the death after a contest that lacked clear chances for long stretches.

A goalless grind

Panama enjoyed the better of an opening half in which Ghana failed to register a single shot, becoming the first side at this World Cup to manage no attempts in a first 45. Goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi made a sharp early stop to deny Cecilio Waterman before being replaced at the interval through injury. Panama's Jiovany Ramos sliced wide a good chance on 38 minutes.

Drama at the death

The breakthrough came on 94:04 when Yirenkyi tucked in Brandon Thomas-Asante's cross at the climax of a sweeping counterattack, sparking a melee before the final whistle. At 20 years and 153 days, the midfielder became the second-youngest player to score for Ghana at a World Cup, and his goal is the Black Stars' latest ever in the tournament, surpassing Asamoah Gyan's 2010 effort against the United States.

Carlos Queiroz's side know they must sharpen up in the final third, but three points from a tricky opener leaves them well placed in Group L.
