Algeria produced a battling comeback to beat Jordan 2-1 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, claiming their first World Cup victory since 2014 and ending the debutants' tournament in the process. The result kept Algeria's knockout hopes very much alive going into the final matchday.

Jordan strike first

Jordan, seeking a famous first World Cup win, took a deserved lead in the 36th minute through Nizar Al-Rashdan. For long stretches the debutants looked capable of holding on, but Algeria's quality from set pieces eventually told.

Mahrez inspires the turnaround

Riyad Mahrez delivered a pinpoint corner in the 69th minute that substitute Nadhir Benbouali headed home to level the scores. Amine Gouiri then completed the turnaround in the 82nd minute from close range after more poor set-piece defending from Jordan. It was the first time Algeria had ever won a World Cup match after conceding first.

The defeat confirmed Jordan's elimination at the first attempt, while Algeria moved onto four points and into second place, setting up a decisive clash with Austria.
