Roberto Martinez's Portugal were brought back down to earth at NRG Stadium in Houston, held to a 1-1 draw by World Cup debutants DR Congo who claimed a historic first point at the finals in their first appearance in 52 years, since competing as Zaire in 1974.

Bright start undone

It took Portugal just six minutes to break the deadlock. Joao Neves, energetic from the first whistle, rose to convert an excellent header from Pedro Neto's cross. At 21 years and 263 days, Neves became the third-youngest Portuguese scorer in World Cup history, behind only Cristiano Ronaldo and Goncalo Ramos.

But DR Congo refused to fold. On the stroke of half-time, Yoane Wissa met a cross with a header of his own at the back post, the Leopards' goal arriving from their 32nd attempt of the campaign and igniting wild celebrations.

Frustration for Ronaldo

Ronaldo, who became the oldest outfield player ever to start a World Cup match, was left frustrated. Portugal thought they had retaken the lead on 54 minutes through Joao Cancelo's spectacular bicycle kick, but it was ruled out for an obvious offside. The shock result left the group wide open after matchday one.
