Late own goal hands Qatar a precious first World Cup point against Switzerland. Meridian world.

Switzerland were left to count the cost of a cruel stoppage-time own goal as Qatar snatched a 1-1 draw at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara. In front of 67,966 spectators, the Swiss controlled long stretches but were undone at the death, while Qatar claimed their first point at any World Cup after losing all three matches as 2022 hosts.

Embolo strikes from the spot

Switzerland took early control and were rewarded on 17 minutes when Breel Embolo converted from the penalty spot. The lead looked likely to be enough as the Swiss managed the game with their customary composure, restricting Qatar to limited sights of goal.

Qatar's stoppage-time reprieve

Then came the twist. Deep into added time, in the 94th minute, defender Miro Muheim turned the ball into his own net to level the scores and stun the Swiss bench. It was a gut-punch for a side that had done almost everything right.

For Qatar, the point was a moment of genuine pride and a reward for their resilience. For Switzerland, two dropped points raised the stakes for their remaining fixtures.
