World Cup 2026 Round of 32: how the bracket is taking shape
With the 48-team group stage winding down, the first 32-side knockout round in World Cup history is coming into focus.

The 2026 World Cup is rewriting its own record book. For the first time, 48 teams contested the group stage and 32 will reach the knockouts: the top two from each of the 12 groups plus the eight best third-placed sides. The Round of 32 opens on June 28 across the United States, Mexico and Canada, and the bracket is only now beginning to harden as the final group games play out.
Who is already through
Six nations have confirmed their places. Hosts Mexico topped Group A and the United States won Group D, both securing home-soil knockout ties. Germany sealed Group E, France clinched Group I and Argentina wrapped up Group J. Norway, back at a World Cup for the first time since 1998, advanced behind France in Group I on the back of Erling Haaland's goals.
Still to be settled
Groups B, C, F, G, H and L remain live, and the chase for the eight third-place slots means several sides can scrape through while losing a game. The full pairings will only be locked once the last whistle of the group stage sounds on June 27.
What is clear is that the giants are arriving in form. With Messi, Mbappe and Haaland all scoring freely, the new last-32 round promises an unusually heavyweight opening to the knockouts.
