Hosts USA and Mexico carry home advantage into the Round of 32. Meridian world.

Two of the three host nations have given their home fans exactly what they wanted: knockout football on home soil. The United States won Group D and Mexico topped Group A, both booking Round of 32 ties in front of partisan crowds.

The USA's route

The USMNT locked up Group D with wins over Paraguay and Australia, edging past a Turkiye side that was eliminated. As a group winner the Americans are in line to face one of the best third-placed finishers, a draw that, on paper, should keep their run alive into the next round.

Mexico at home

Mexico's Group A success sets up a Round of 32 fixture expected to be played in Mexico, with the deafening backing of a home crowd. El Tri will fancy their chances against a third-placed qualifier as they look to finally push beyond the round-of-16 ceiling that has haunted them.

Prediction

Home advantage and favourable seeding make both co-hosts narrow favourites in their openers. Expect at least one of the USA and Mexico to ride the crowd into the Round of 16.
